DKIM: Why You Need It For Your Email Marketing Campaign

Most online businesses attribute their success to their email marketing copy, but most ignore the core back-end technologies that can make or break their email marketing success. There is little doubt that the content in your email is critical and the copy in your subject line is the key to open rates. But imagine what would happen if you took the same amount of time ensuring that your email ends up in the in-box (rather than a spam box) as you did writing the copy? The results would be fantastic, and best of all, you would only have to do this work once.

This article isn’t for you if you’re a casual email marketer. But, if you’re an email marketing fanatic who wants to learn the technical side of sending an email successfully through a spam filter, you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s start by taking a look at one of the technologies that help true email marketers get into their subscribers in-box. Professionals call it DKIM, the rest of the world knows it as DomainKeys Identified Mail.

Overview of DKIM
DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is an email authentication technology that allows email senders and recipients to know without a doubt that a message originated from the source it says it’s from. Let me give you an example.

You’ve certainly received an email that supportable was sent from a legitimate and reputable address, but upon opening it you knew it was spam. Have you ever wondered why an African prince wanted to send you millions of dollars just for helping him get his money out of Kenya? Did this email really come from an African prince or did it come from a scammer? How can you tell the difference?

Think of this email as a letter you receive through the mail. Someone wrote the letter, placed it in an enclosed envelope, addressed it to you at your home or office, added postage and a return address indicating who sent the letter and then they dropped it in the mailbox and waited for you to open it and respond. Here’s the problem. Before DKIM, the sender could have masqueraded as anyone in the return address block to trick you into opening the letter and doing what they asked.

Advantages on DKIM
Through the use of public and private key technology as well as the use of digital signatures, DKIM can digitally prove the source of an email. This means that big email companies like Gmail and Yahoo can simply check to see which emails are legitimate and which emails are obviously spam. They do this by checking with the server to insure that the email came from where it indicated it came from. Through the use of technologies like DKIM, there is a much better chance that legitimate email will get though spam filters and illegitimate messages will get blocked.

An added benefit of DKIM signed mail is that it ensures the email arrives untouched. This prevents tampering with the message while it’s in transit. I told you this was for advanced email marketers.

DKIM isn’t supported nor is it used by everyone. It would be naive to assume that your ISP, website host or email marketing company is implementing it on your behalf. Since DKIM is an added layer of security, and not a required process, it must be compatible with older, non-DKIM email servers. This means that if you’re not using DKIM, some of your email is still getting through to your subscribers, but not all of it. With DKIM you can take advantage of this powerful added layer of trust and improve your rate of success.

To an email marketer, this means you can either assure your subscribers (and their spam filters) that your emails are truly from you, or you can leave them guessing whether or not someone is pretending to be you. Think of DKIM as a way to help your customers (and their spam filters) trust you, and trust goes a long way in the anti-spam world.

The Next Step
If email marketing is a core component of your business, you may want to take the following steps:

1. Check to see if DKIM is being used on your email server.
Search Google for “DKIM Test” or something similar and you will find several free services that will help you discover whether your system is implementing DKIM properly. Otherwise, if you know how to inspect email headers look for a “DomainKey-Signature” field immediately followed by garbled text. This is the hashed signature of the email. If you do not see a DomainKey-Signature field, this means your server does not use DKIM.

2. Ask your email-marketing provider to enable DKIM for you.
More than likely if you’re using a shared host like Bluehost or Hostmonster, this will be an impossible request due to how DKIM is configured at the mail transport agent (MTA) level. If they cannot enable DKIM for you, you have very few options. You can move to a managed email service like iContact, Constant Contact or Aweber, or you can move to a dedicated or virtual dedicated server that gives you root access.

Getting emails into your subscriber’s in-box isn’t as easy as it use to be. By hosting your own software on your own server you can send emails to thousands of people without having to pay a company to maintain your list, but the effort might be too great.

If this sounds too foreign or complicated, you may want to reconsider self-hosting, as the paid services will take care of it for you and save you tons of time and headaches.

Ask yourself what’s more important. Do you want to save money, or do you want your emails to get to the intended recipient? If the answer is both, owning and maintaining your own email marketing software may be just what you’re looking for.

As you probably know…multiple websites usually incur multiple charges even with the same hosting service. An autoresponder account is totally different. You could have hundreds of different lists being fed and maintained from different websites, blogs, and forums…and all for one nominal subscription fee.

Three Things You Need to Know About Online Email Marketing and Your Internet Business

Online email marketing is not hard to understand but it can get pretty dicey in determining if it is the right fit for your online business. In my opinion no matter what the circumstances online email marketing is a must for any internet business but still there are factors to consider.

1. Your target audience
Before you spend time, currency and effort into email marketing, you have to figure out how often your target audience will be online. An email marketing campaign is not worthwhile if people are not even online to check out your information. Find out if a market exists for your product or service. You can open your browser, type in any keyword search terms you wish and hit enter. Is there an audience? Next, use a keyword research tool to check out how often (per month) people are searching for information utilizing a general keyword and all the variations. This is powerful stuff. Knowing what and how your audience is searching for information can greatly help you determine whether you should start an email marketing campaign.

2. You’re Selling What?
Since we live in an advertising world that is 24/7, it is easy to get caught up in the hype. This goes for many email marketers who choose a product because it promises a big affiliate commission but they never have a clear understanding of what they are selling. This translates into not being able to explain in your emails why people need your product or service. It’s also important to remember sending people a sales letter in the disguise of an email will usually not work. Promote by providing quality information that people can utilize. Put together a small report consisting of five articles you write and give it away free to your email list. Integrate the product links into your report but use sparingly. It is not hard to get accused of spamming these days. In the early years of email marketing you could send out unsolicited email as long as you didn’t overdo it. Guess what? Some people overdid it.

According to Anti-Spam Spam-Unit, “some researchers estimate that just under 100 billion spam messages are sent worldwide every twenty-four hours as of June 2007”. You cannot blame people for not wanting to open an email box full of spam but it’s gotten to the point that a straight forward email can now come under the heading of spam if the recipient wishes to complain. I have seen customers sign up to an email list then forget about it. When an email arrived promoting a product, they quickly yelled spam and wanted to know how the marketer had gotten their email address.

Even if people do remember signing up to your list, they have gotten so use to deleting emails without reading that getting them to open it is a science all to itself. This is why you want to give real thought to your subject line. Stay away from extravagant promises that will only trigger the spam filters. Keep in mind that certain topics (like money) in your subject line can also trigger the spam filters. Ask a question or create a top five list on the problems and or solutions to your topic. Think of your subject line as a strong push that gets your list to open your email so they can get more useful information

If you are having any doubts about incorporating it into your online marketing system just focus on your target audience by doing some keyword research, provide useful information that helps you to state the benefits of your product or service clearly and craft an email (particularly the subject line) that won’t raise a red flag with the spam filters. You Need To Use autoresponder software if you want to succeed in any internet business. The best way to build more sales is to build more relationships.

Your plan this year is to increase your online sales, we all know that. But how are you going to do that? You can do that by getting closer to your customer base. If not, someone could enter a bogus email address on your site which could lead to spam complaints from those who do not know where your email came from.

Once however, the right person confirms his or her request, your autoresponder sends a message of welcome and also a link where to obtain the promised gift.

Now you have an contact name and email address you can use to build a relationship. You can now send messages to these people on a regular basis easily with your autoresponder.

Use a program that allows you to easily set up messages to be delivered on the day you specify. For instance you can set up a series of email messages to go out every other day for a month, but all you had to do was spend one hour to set up a month long email campaign.

You can also find software to create and send out newsletters to your list. The software will provide a choice of several newsletter templates that you can choose according to your business. As with the email message option, you can send out your newsletter once a week, or once a month, or whenever you set them to go out.

These are the basic features most autoresponder software offer. But you can find different programs with different capabilities.

That list of people who have indicated to you that they would like to have more information about your product or service. This is the way to ensure you can contact all of these potential customers without having to send individual emails to everyone. Now, what can you do with it? You have seen a capture form on the vast majority of websites you look at. It is a form that asks the visitor to enter his name and email address in exchange for something. This is usually, some special report that can be downloaded that is related to the subject, or niche, that is being discussed on the sales page. The autoresponder takes that information and enters it into a managed list automatically, without the page owner having to do anything.

The autoresponder will:

1. Send the visitor to a download page to get his free report. This page might also have additional information to attempt to get a sale by making a special deal or a one time offer.

2. Insert his name and address into the list. This ensures the inclusion into a system that starts sending your information to him, on a regular schedule you set up, to continue to keep him updated with more information and additional opportunities to make a sale.

3. Will also send him a confirmation email, allowing him to confirm that he would like to receive your emails. That is why the first item is important. He can opt out which means he can cancel his permission at this time and you have probably lost him for good.

How does all of this work and what do I have to do?

Since people surf the ‘net to get, primarily, information, you need to help them as much as possible. People do not like to be sold, however, many of them do like to buy. They just need to have the information they need to make that decision. The autoresponder is your tool for this.

There are a number of autroresponder companies on the Internet. The vast majority of them are not expensive, some of them are actually free. You log on, set up an account and begin to create what are called campaigns. A campaign is a series of emails, sent out on a schedule, usually every two to three days. Each campaign is set up for each product or service you are promoting. The most popular autoresponder companies allow for an unlimited number of campaigns.

When your visitor enters his information in your capture form, it is fed into this autoresponder and that system takes over. It sends those emails out and provides the valuable information you have put in these emails. It should be remembered that quite a few people do not make a purchase until they have been exposed to these messages a number of times. The very minimum number of these should be seven emails.

Each email should help the visitor know a little more about what you are promoting and why he needs what you are promoting.

An autoresponder helps take care of some of the mechanics of email marketing so you can concentrate on the more important stuff.

Who Could Possibly Need A Doodad Called An Autoresponder

A term that confuses just about everyone new to Internet Marketing and home based business is “autoresponder”. When I mention the term to friends or associates, they almost always reply with a blank stare, “what the heck is that” or “I really don’t like those at all”. In all fairness, those same people said the same thing about e-mail 25 years ago. Even though the concept is very simple, autoresponders are very, very powerful if properly used.

Okay, here’s the short answer: an autoresponder is an automatic response mechanism for e-mail. More precisely, they are the mechanism that sends an automatic, relevant e-mail to someone in response to some specific action.

Still confused? Okay, in their simplest form an autoresponder is just an e-mail acknowledging a newsletter signup, a post to a forum or an explanation of a product that someone requested. I’m sure just about everyone who has been on the internet for any amount of time and done anything online has received quite a few of these. Anytime you make a purchase online, you receive a receipt via e-mail with all of the details of your purchase. An autoresponder sent that. It’s like robotic e-mail with a pretty good brain (logic.)

You can get much more complex with autoresponders. A good autoresponder package will allow you to send more than one e-mail at specific intervals to select recipients. They will even allow those e-mails to include custom information such as the recipients’ name, dates, time or a variety of other customized information. Specific responses can be sent for specific inquiries by autoresponders. Many are even smart enough to know not to send the same message to any recipient more than once, regardless of how many lists they may be subscribed to. However, the most common use is to respond to rote inquiries over and over and over, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with no human intervention.

Understand? Now, what the heck else are they good for?

Well, every webmaster wants to get people to not only visit his site, but to come back time and again. Repeat visitors are the most prized visitors. In addition, if you are marketing a product or service, the traditional wisdom is, it takes more than one exposure to an ad to produce a sale – usually the number agreed on is seven!

Those simple thank you messages for subscribing to a newsletter are, in fact, critically significant. You see, a visitor has stopped by your site and left you a message. Not only are you thanking him, but you are doing so later, after he has left your site. This means he will be reminded of his visit, and conceivably visit again. He may save the e-mail because he wants to remember the URL or some other information. If you advertise something in this thank you message, your visitor gets to see it.

Of course, sending a series of messages after the fact, over a period of time, is even better. If you can send, say, a message immediately, one a day later, one a week later and perhaps one a month later, you are reaching out to that individual maybe four times in a month which is great. Don’t overwhelm them though, just send them something useful and valuable and remind them of your site or product or service. After three or four well timed and value-added messages, that person is likely to remember you and your product. If done correctly, they will remember you in a good light. If not, they’ll opt-out of your list and possibly even blacklist you. That would be a bad thing.

Oh yeah, always, ALWAYS give your recipient a way to opt-out of the stream of messages in every single e-mail (unless you are only sending a single message, of course). Most good autoresponder packages will do this for you.

Autoresponders come in a variety of flavors, though they all perform the same basic task. You can buy an autoresponder package to run on your own web site or you can subscribe to one of the good autoresponder services available on the Internet. They differ slightly in cost, features and limits, but they all perform the basic tasks.

Some web hosting providers even provide some autoresponder functionality as part of their monthly charge. That can be a good way to get your feet wet, but eventually, you’ll want to subscribe to a full-featured autoresponder that you have maximum control of.

Whatever you do, never lose sight of the fact that you owe a high degree of privacy to your list members. Never abuse your privilege to communicate with them, always offer an easy, one-click unsubscribe function in every message you send and never share your list with anybody. If you want to joint venture with another business, you mail their offer to your list. Never give them access to your list.

Make sure you are aware of, and understand, the anti-spamming laws that are in place. Violating any anti-spam measure can get you blacklisted, shut down by your ISP or worse. Just practice the Golden Rule – Never do anything unto your e-mail list that you would not want done unto you.

A final note: this is the critical part so listen closely. All this neat autoresponder magic is done AUTOMATICALLY. This means you, the webmaster, are communicating constantly with your customers, prospects and visitors without lifting a finger. Whatever message you are attempting to deliver is made a hundred times more powerful when you apply the timing and personalization features found in these simple techniques. But that doesn’t relieve you of your customer care responsibilities. Always maintain the highest level of support and your list will never be aware that most of their e-mail messages are automated.

If you’re not using an unlimited autoresponder, you’re just asking for trouble. You might be fine today. You might be fine next week. But if you start growing the way you want to grow, you’ll eventually wish that you had started your list with an unlimited option.

Here’s the scoop. Not all autoresponders and autoresponder services are created equal. Some will offer you all of the flexibility and options in the world. Others, the ones that are often a little cheaper than those top-notch alternatives, keep the price low by offering fewer extra services and by limiting your scope of use.

You might have a cap on subscribers. You might have a limit on how many messages you can send. There are a variety of limitations and they vary based upon the autoresponder in question. Those seemingly innocuous little limitations can eventually create massive problems for a marketer.

With more and more people seeking riches in Internet marketing, those who are successful always end up building an email list on auto-pilot. Automated list building has been around ever since the Internet first started being used for selling products and services. It is not going anywhere soon, either.

It’s a cliche but it’s true. The money is in the list. The whole reason for building a list is to sell to people, then sell some more to them, then keep selling. With a list, you have a private stage to talk to your customers. You can’t beat that for an environment to develop a strong bond with both prospects and repeat customers.

But there are conditions and skills for making a successful and profitable list. They have remained fixed over the years. They all center on the concept of opt-in, which means visitors give you permission to sell to them by voluntarily providing you with their name and email address. The only real change has been some recent refinements in the automated list builder concept and that’s about all.

Seven of the critical things you need to know about list-building are given below.

7. Keep your list clean and private. You want to keep a good reputation; otherwise people will opt out of your list. Trust may not always keep a member from opting out, but lack of trust will guarantee that he or she will drop you like a hot iron.
